Diabetes Mellitus – Basic Info, Tips to manage and a recipe

Diabetes mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period.

  • Type 2 Diabetes A chronic condition that affects the way the body processes blood sugar (glucose).
  • Type 1 diabetes A chronic condition in which the pancreas produces little or no insulin.
  • Prediabetes A condition in which blood sugar is high, but not high enough to be type 2 diabetes.
  • Gestational diabetes A form of high blood sugar affecting pregnant women.

Type 2 Diabetes

Your pancreas makes a hormone called insulin. It’s what lets your cells turn glucose from the food you eat into energy. People with type 2 diabetes make insulin, but their cells don’t use it as well as they should. Doctors call this insulin resistance. At first, the pancreas makes more insulin to try to get glucose into the cells. But eventually it can’t keep up, and the sugar builds up in your blood instead.
